OBJECTION 2: “The Bible has been changed.”
Steps:
Say, “This is a common thing that is believed by many Muslims. But do you know what the Quran itself says about the Tawrat and Injil?”
Share Sura 3:3 and/or 10:94: “It says that God sent down the Tawrat and Injil, and Mohammad tells the people listening to him that, if they doubt his message, they should ask those who read the books before them.”
Say, “If you follow Mohammad, then it makes sense to trust the books that he trusted. He also said in the Quran that the word of God never changes (Sura 10:64). And we can look at what the Bible says about itself.”
Share Isaiah 40:8, then John 5:39-40. (If you have time, read John 5:36-47 together.)
Ask, “As Jesus says, we shouldn’t believe someone just because of what they say or do. Would you want to study together some of the Scriptures that talk about Jesus, to see if they really do confirm his testimony?”
If they say yes, find a time to start the More than a Prophet story track with them!
Objection 2 Example Dialogue
YOU:
“This is a common thing that is believed by many Muslims. But do you know what the Quran itself says about the Tawrat and Injil?”
“Yes, I do! It says…”
YOU:
“It says that God sent down the Tawrat and Injil (Sura 3:3), and Mohammad tells the people listening to him that, if they doubt his message, they should ask those who read the books before them (10:94). Have you heard these verses? If Mohammad said to read the Tawrat and Injil to confirm his message, then it must mean that they had access to books that he thought were trustworthy.
Or
“It also says that Christians and Jews have twisted the book in Sura 3:78.” (“And there is indeed a group among them who twist their tongues with the book, that you may suppose it to be from the book. But it is not from the book. And they say, ‘It is from God,’ though it is not from God. And they knowingly speak a lie against God.” You can respond, “Let’s read that one together. It says that there are some who change the meaning of the book, but it does not say the book itself has been changed.” Then move along. The point is not to debate the meaning of the Quran but to bring the conversation back to Jesus and what Scripture says about Him.)
YOU:
“In the Quran, it also says that the words of God cannot be changed (Sura 10:94). And we can test that, actually—did you know we have copies of the complete Bible from hundreds of years before Mohammad was born, and they match the Bibles we have today? So we can be very confident that the Bible has not been changed. Then we can look at what the Bible says about itself. It says, ‘The grass withers, and the flowers fade, but the Word of the Lord remains forever’ (Isaiah 40:8). And Jesus himself talked about the Bible when the religious leaders accused him of blasphemy.” (Open to John 5:39-40 and ask them to read it; or, share the simple version below. If you have time, read John 5:36-47.)
“Jesus said to them, ‘If I testify about myself, my testimony alone doesn’t make it true. But the Father also gives His testimony about me, and I know His word is true. But you don’t know Him. And you study the Tawrat and the Prophets because you think that you will find life in them, but it is these very scriptures that testify about me, and still you refuse to come to me and receive the life I give.”
YOU:
“As Jesus says, we shouldn’t believe someone just because of what they say or do. Would you want to study together some of the Scriptures that talk about Jesus, to see if they really do confirm his testimony?”
FRIEND:
“Sure.” (Great! Find a time to start the More than a Prophet story track with them. Or, if they don’t have time to meet again, share the “More than a Prophet” gospel story with them.)
Or
“No, I still believe it was corrupted.” (No problem. Move on, praying for them and checking in occasionally, but don’t invest much time with them until the Spirit begins to open their heart.)
(At some point, your Friend may bring up prophecies about Mohammad in the Bible. The appendix lists these. But you can simply say, “Okay. Where does it say this? Let’s look at it together.” Then read the verses they bring up. Be sure to read the context, also. It will become clear that none of the prophecies have anything to do with Mohammad.)
